Update: Russian speaking reader Ilya Kuchinskiy informed us that Izvestia is indeed a respected news source, but like we anticipated, the translation is erroneous. Literally it means “Skolkovo has some plans find investors and has invited to come and work in skolkovo. They have some talks to work but there is no plans to open Apple center in Russia, it is like thay just send invitation and google, facebook, apple just thinking, that’s it

According to a translated report from Russian publication Izvestia (via MacRumors), Apple is one of a handful of tech companies, including Google and Facebook, in talks to open a research facility at the Skolkovo Innovation center near Moscow, Russia. We will have to take this report for what it is; we are skeptical given a long line of rumors this week that came mostly from poorly translated reports that were all later debunked. First, we heard rumors about Apple acquiring German TV manufacturer Loewe, which was debunked later, and then China Daily misquoted Foxconn’s Terry Gou. Finally, Apple allegedly ordered “huge” numbers of flexible displays from Samsung for the next iPhone—debunked. We are hoping for a follow-up from an additional source. Apple announced its plan last year to spend roughly $900 million opening 40 new retail locations in 2012. In March, we told you new stores were coming to Germany, Spain, Australia, and France‘s Burgundy wine region, and several reports this week confirmed a handful of new locations for the United Kingdom, France, and Canada. Ten of the 40 stores Apple planned for 2012 will début in the U.S., and recent reports indicated two of those U.S. stores will be located in California and Salt Lake City…

The latest report from ifoAppleStore claimed Apple has taken up the remainder of a 15-year lease (10 years remaining) for a new store in the Drake Circus Shopping Centre in Plymouth, U.K. The news comes from employees of a Zara retail store, which is the current tenant of the 21,045 square-foot space. A timeline for Apple moving in is still unknown, but ifosAppleStore claimed Zara is moving out at the end of the month.

ifoAppleStore also reported yesterday Apple’s plans for a new retail location at Market Mall in Calgary, Alberta. It is smaller than the new U.K. store—and many others—at just 5,448 square-feet. However, Apple plans to move to a new space within the mall that will offer a curved 77-foot wide storefront and 7, 287 square-feet within a year of moving in. The store is expected to open sometime this year.

As for the U.S. locations: A report from ABC4/KTVX (video above) claimed Apple would open a new store at City Creek Center mall in Salt Lake City. The report said Apple was offered a significant incentive to open up shop, and one source claimed that could include up to “five years of occupancy, rent-free.” Apple is also planning a future store for Bakersfield, Calif., in 2012. Finally, we have confirmation of a new location in the Quatre Temps shopping center at La Défense in France. The store was previously rumored, but MacGeneration recently posted the image above that shows the inside of the store under construction. The store is expected to open in June.

It will offer 30 nights of free music for live attendees and users of iOS devices through the recently updated iTunes Festival app. Apple snagged some of this summer’s hottest acts including Jack White (previously of the White Stripes), One Direction, and R&B superstar Usher. Norah Jones, who performed at Steve Jobs’ Tribute event in Apple’s Headquarters, will take the Festival stage as well. The full line-up will include more than 60 artists…

Reuters reports on comments from Aaron Sorkin, the screen writer of the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic from Sony. Sorkin says that the film will not be much like the biography, and that while he knows what he is not going to put into the screenplay, he knows “so little about what [he is] going to write.”

“I know so little about what I am going to write. I know what I am not going to write. It can’t be a straight ahead biography because it’s very difficult to shake the cradle-to-grave structure of a biography, ” Sorkin told reporters at a news conference for his upcoming HBO drama “The Newsroom.”

Sorkin, also known as the writer behind the movie The Social Network, also said that he will move his full attention onto the Steve Jobs movie project late next month (June). Perhaps most interestingly, Reuters also reports that Sony has hired the Apple co-founder and long time friend of Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, as a “tutor” for the film. Wozniak will presumably provide excellent insight into the early years of Apple and Jobs.

Adding to reports by both the Wall Street Journal and Reuters with claims of a next-generation iPhone with a larger screen, Bloomberg reports that Apple’s next-generation iPhone features a design that the late Apple co-founder worked personally on. Bloomberg’s report does not specifically say this new iPhone has a four-inch display, but that screen size seems to be the one that Apple is currently targeting. Bloomberg specifically says that the next iPhone, likely launching in October, will feature an “overhauled” look, but does not offer any specifics other than a “bigger” display.

Fast Company summarizes comments made by Apple board member Mickey Drexler regarding Steve Jobs vision beyond Apple’s current product lineup. According to the board member, Steve Jobs dream before he passed away was to design a car. He calls this an “iCar.” While Jobs never got around to actually designing this automobile, it is definitely fun to speculate what the maker of the iPad and Mac would dream up in terms of innovation for the road.

On something that we will actually likely see coming out of Apple’s labs, Drexler commented on Apple’s approach to the living room. Apple has long said that the living room has been a hobby to them with the Apple TV set-top-box, but Drexler commented: “the living room they’re dealing with at some point in the near future.” This of course ramps up the long-running speculation about an Apple Television set.

Rumors range from a 2013 launch to Siri-based input. Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he also would have liked to reinvent photography. (Image: Jalopnik)

Overdrive Design blog’s Niilo Autio pointed us to the mock-ups he did of how apps might benefit from a 4-inch display using a resolution of 640-by-1,152. The images below are compared to apps on the existing iPhone 4/4S design. The added screen real estate is especially noticeable in the Safari and Mail apps.
