The number of apps currently available in the App Store has hit eye-watering levels as it breaks the 1.6 million mark, and beyond the recommended or top-rated filters, there's pretty much no chance of any single person managing to look through them all.
This does mean that plenty of great apps simply get overlooked in the mix, with the recommended and top-rated filters getting dominated by the same type of thing over and over again. Below are some overlooked categories that all have great options for adding something a bit extra to your device.
Global Radio Apps
In the era of Spotify and on-demand music streaming, turning on the radio is not often the first stop for music fans. There are radio stations around the world, though, that let the listener experience a slice of the musical culture from hundreds of countries, and these stations can be accessed directly from your phone.
Of particular note are apps like Simple Radio which now has over 65,000 global radio stations, offers playback while the device is locked and is free to use. There's also the myTuner Radio app, which is similar but has the functionality to support a range of Apple devices. As an alternative, TuneIn radio has both a massive library of radio stations as well as a strong selection of audiobooks, although several parts of the app need to be bought to be used fully so it's not entirely free.
Casino Apps
To clarify, when we talk about casino apps, these aren't casual game apps that just have some card or roulette features to them, as those you can find everywhere on the App Store front page. These are apps directly created by real casinos themselves which have all the functionality that their main site would have, except optimised and cleaned up for use on mobile devices.
It's not just the most famous names either, as casinos all over the world have their own apps. For example, Yebo Casino, an online casino from South Africa, have full integration for their games to be played on either iPhone or iPad, and because many of these games are designed with a "mobile first" mentality, the playing experience is often smoother that way.
Gardening Apps
Gardening is one of those hobbies that people don't get as invested in because it looks difficult to learn. What they don't know is that there are helping hands available right on their iPhones in the form of special apps, whether it's for beginner advice or more complex topics.
Exclusive to iOS is the Into Garden app which is a comprehensive planning and management tool for gardeners of all types, including schedules for planting and a host of features for tracking growth and progress. We have to recommend Garden Tags as well, which is effectively a gardening social media platform great for getting advice and sharing your progress with the world.
Those are just a few our of favourite picks but we'd always recommend taking a few minutes to dive deeper into the App Store to find some hidden treasures like these!
