Apple is a household name today because of the enduring brilliance of its products. Regardless of period in the company's history, Apple has always boldly and ambitiously spearheaded new developing technologies, often setting the direction for global trends with its innovative product design. It's no surprise that at the very beginning of this year, it became the first company in history to hit a $3 trillion market cap. Here's a look back at some of their most defining products.
10. iBook
The iBook released back in 1999 and is a perfect example of the brave design decisions taken by the company. While laptops as an invention had already been around a couple of decades by this time, it was in terms of visual aesthetics that the iBook really stood out as a fun, colourful and quirky laptop. It's a shame you can't find anything quite as bold in the market today!
9. Apple Watch
The Apple Watch is another product that wasn't the first of its kind, but it was certainly the first smartwatch to really raise the bar on the idea of wearable tech and really show off its potential. Today we're up to Series 7, which was released just last year.
8. Macintosh
Back in 1984, the Macintosh revolutionised the market by providing the first relatively affordable desktop personal computer with a graphical interface, inbuilt monitor and mouse. While fierce competition from Commodore and IBM prevented total market dominance, the Macintosh very much set the stage for decades of Apple growth and innovation.
7. MacBook Air
Steve Jobs wowed the world in 2008 when he pulled an impossibly slim and gorgeously sleek laptop out of a brown envelope. The power it provided given its portability was as impressive then as its most recent third generation is today.
6. Apple II
Even before the first Macintosh, in 1977, the Apple II showed the world the potential of the home computer as an entertainment and business medium. Its colour graphics and efficient processing evoke a rich sense of nostalgia to this day and provided the early impetus that Apple needed to set a solid foundation for future growth.
5. AirPods
AirPods are Apple's signature earbuds and it's hard to find someone today who wouldn't recognize them. They're Bluetooth connecting and feature a load of clever tech like background noise filtering and wireless charging. At the end of last year their third generation came out and have been warmly received!
4. iPad
Although Steve Jobs and Apple had been experimenting with the idea of a tablet-style electronic device ever since the early 90s, it wasn't until 2010 that the iPad launched and perfectly captured the vision behind such a product. Since then it's been one of Apple's most successful products both in terms of unit sales as well as the amount and variety of apps available for it.
3. iMac G3
Stepping back further into the past again, the iMac G3 was released in the late 90s and came to define the company as it entered the new millennium. It is also a great example of the brave design decisions taken by Apple in that it lacked the otherwise ubiquitous floppy disks and serial ports and instead relied heavily on its USB ports. Such a great example of Apple either directing technology's future or at least reading it accurately!
2. iPhone
The penultimate item on this list is the iPhone, first releasing in 2007. Similar to many of the products on this list, it's an instantly recognizable device and a true digital heirloom of our cultural generation and its digital age. Like so many of Apple's products, the iPhone wasn't the absolute first of its kind, but it was the one that made the most out of its niche. iPhones remain one of the most common smartphones on the market because of their versatility. Today, you can play mobile slots using an Apple iPhone, you can carry out professional word processing and you can even record high quality home videos.
1. iPod
It's hard to say whether the iPhone or the iPod is more iconic, but for so many of us who grew up in this era defined by Apple's smart takes on modern technology, the iPod formed the most intimate connection. Extremely portable, we took our iPod music players everywhere with us and it remains an enormously nostalgic device full of happy memories.
